Zaragoza and the Towns of Aragon by Minibus

Zaragoza is where many groups break the journey between Madrid and Barcelona, and it deserves longer. The Pilar, La Seo and the Aljafería fill one day, and a minibus opens up Goya's birthplace, castles and the Monasterio de Piedra for the next.

The Pilar and the weekday zone

The low-emission zone wraps the old town inside the Calle San Vicente de Paúl, the Coso, the Calle Mayoral and the Paseo de Echegaray y Caballero, so the Plaza del Pilar is inside it. It applies Monday to Friday from 08:00 to 20:00, and fines have been possible since 12 December 2025. In the evenings, at weekends and on public holidays it is open to every vehicle.

Any DGT label lets a vehicle in. Unlabelled and foreign-registered vehicles must be entered in the city's ZBE register first, and a vehicle that strays in by mistake and leaves within 15 minutes is not penalised. The Plaza del Pilar has no official set-down point on record, so the operator settles where you step off. The Fiestas del Pilar, around 12 October each year, close roads in the centre.

Matches, concerts and the station

La Romareda has been demolished and is being rebuilt, with a new stadium aimed at the 2027-28 season. Until then Real Zaragoza plays at the temporary Ibercaja Estadio on the former Expo site. The Pabellón Príncipe Felipe is the main indoor arena, and the Feria de Zaragoza sits on the A-2 west of the city. Many groups arrive by high-speed train at Zaragoza-Delicias, where the minibus can meet them.

Goya, castles and monasteries

Belchite's old village and Fuendetodos, where Goya was born, are each about an hour away. Huesca, Calatayud and the Monasterio de Veruela are around 1 h 15 min, Tarazona about 1 h 25 min, the Castillo de Loarre about 1 h 40 min and the Monasterio de Piedra about 1 h 50 min. Sos del Rey Católico, Teruel and Pamplona all sit beyond two hours.

Albarracín, about 183 km away, takes around 2 h 45 min each way. Since a driver's day is capped at 9 hours at the wheel, pairing it with Teruel and a night away is kinder than a return trip.

What travellers ask us

Which airport should we fly into?

Neither big airport is close: Madrid-Barajas Terminal 4 is about 313 km, around 4 h 10 min, and Barcelona Terminal 1 about 299 km, around 4 h. Zaragoza has its own airport about 16 km west, and the high-speed train is another easy option.

Our minibus is registered in France. Can it reach the Pilar on a weekday?

Yes, once it is in the city's ZBE register. A foreign vehicle can register with a manufacturer's emissions certificate or an environmental document from its country. At weekends no registration is needed.

We are coming to watch Real Zaragoza. Where is the ground?

At the temporary Ibercaja Estadio in the north of the Expo site for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 seasons. Check the ticket for the stadium name on the day.
